Space Camp - Solar System Artwork
Today is the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin setting foot on the moon so we decided to end our week of space activities by sleeping on the moon! We turned the space underneath Ollie's cabin bed into a space camp for him & Phoebe to sleep in.
First we made a poster of the solar system using a long strip of a roll of paper from Ikea. I asked Ollie & Phoebe to gather together lots of circular items from their toy kitchen that we could draw around. Once we had lots to choose from we looked at a picture of the solar system and worked out what items were the best size for each planet and spread them out in the right order, using the biggest item for the sun & the smallest item for Mercury.
We then drew around the items and then painted or coloured in each planet and labelled them.
We still had the glow in the dark Hama bead stars from our Harry Potter Book Night party so we hung these from the slats of the bed overhead along with some rockets & stars they drew on the leftover paper plate centres from last week's dreamcatchers.
The children helped me to put up their solar system artwork, put in their bedding & hang a blanket down the side of the bed to make it darker along with adding their rockets they made, alien toys & torches.
They were so delighted with their den & couldn't wait to show it to Daddy & Grandma. They are just getting ready for bed with Daddy so I am off upstairs now for family space stories at the children's request. Blasting off! 😊🚀🌛
