Make Your Own Rocket - Space Activity

I've been talking to the children about this week being the 50th anniversary of the first man of the moon & they showed an interest in the subject so I thought I'd do some themed activities with them over the week.

We had a couple of hours free before cubs this afternoon so I set up this invitation to build a rocket out in the sunshine. We used cardboard for the legs (that's probably not the technical term for them!), a salt tub for the rocket, a semi circle of paper to make the cone nose of the rocket, red, yellow & orange tissue paper to make the flames, sellotape & insulation tape plus some pens & paints to decorate.

Insulation tape on both sides worked well for sticking on the legs, I don't think sellotape would have held them on. They also used this for sticking on the nose & enjoyed picking which colour to use.

We could have made a more professional rocket covering the tub with paper & adding round windows but this was long enough for an after-school activity for them & I didn't want to take the enjoyment out of it by pushing it further.

They were very pleased with their rockets anyway & it was a nice start to what will hopefully be a fun-filled Space week! 🚀
