Name Recognition Game

When we attended the school briefing before our daughter started Reception last year the teacher ran through some important ways to prepare your child for school. One of the areas I felt we needed to work on with Phoebe was recognising her name as at that stage she thought any word beginning with the letter P was her name. So I re-used some slips of paper from our Royal Wedding party that we'd recently held to make a name recognition game. On about half of the pieces of paper I wrote Phoebe. On some I wrote words she was  vaguely familiar with - Mummy, Daddy, Ollie - and on some I wrote words similar to her name - phone, photo and poo poo, because if anything will engage my children in an activity then it's toilet humour!

We used it as a Pairs game, turning over two flags each go to try and find two matching words. The winner was the person who found the most matching words.

Phoebe really enjoyed searching for her own name and it helped immensely in learning to recognise her name on her school peg, jumper and book bag when September came around.
