The Tiger Who Came to Tea - Judith Kerr Play Date Tea

The recent sad news that author Judith Kerr had passed away made me think about how much Mog books have been involved in our family life. We have read the books a lot, especially the two Christmas books in December and we love watching the Mog Sainsburys advert on YouTube, the kids and I are in stitches every time.

A fellow Instagram blogger, Playdates with Rainbows, suggested we all celebrate The Tiger Who Came to Tea on 14th June as it is Judith Kerr's birthday and I loved the idea. I invited two of Ollie & Phoebe's friends over to join us for a tiger themed after-school play date.

When they arrived at the house, the tuff tray was set up with home-made orange and black play dough with loose parts - pipe cleaners, googly eyes, tea cups and cake cases. They got stuck straight in - they made tiger cakes, tiger biscuits using the teacups as cookie cutters and tiger pizza - they involved the toy kitchen which is in the same room and put them in the oven to cook and had a smooth little production line going!

Next they made their own tiger cakes. They had two cakes each to decorate - with orange and black icing or with orange and black dyed desiccated coconut which they could stick on as 'fur' with either jam or icing.

They really enjoyed this and spent ages decorating - I think there was more icing than cake by the end of it!

Finally I asked them all to think who they would invite if they could have tea with anyone or anything. I asked my husband to scan the book cover and remove the word 'tiger' & the tiger from the picture and add an '&' so they could add their name and guest to the cover.

Before they created their own cover I told them I had created my own version as inspiration and read it to them - I had stuck theirs and their friend's photos over the faces in the book and read it to them using their names.

I was struggling to read at times because the kid's laughter was making me laugh so hard - oh boy, is laughter infectious! They were in stitches throughout the story seeing their faces beaming out on every page, I would really recommend you try this, it was such fun!

They were probably a bit too giddy after the funny story to draw their own tea guest as we had one wee and one poop coming to tea 😳 but we also had a bunny and an armadillo 😅 and they all decided to elaborate on the back of the sheet, adding extra drawings, ratings, reviews and blurbs - it was really lovely to see them getting so involved in the activity!

This was such a lovely start to the weekend and so nice to see how involved they all got with it, I will definitely do a themed play date like this again. Thank you Judith Kerr, you are still inspiring us!🐯😊
